Growing and Fertilizing Carrots Organically

Carrots

Carrots are one of the most nutrient packed vegetables you can grow in your garden.  It's off the charts when it comes to Vitamin A. This high vitamin content, in the form of beta carotene, gives this root vegetable it's beautiful orange color.

Think you can't grow carrots in containers? Small or midget varieties of carrots work well in container gardens.

Varieties of Carrots to Grow in Your Vegetable Garden:

  • Bambina:  These carrot "fingerlings" are sweet at any stage.  Early harvest make these carrots a must for your vegetable garden. Days to harvest: 60.

  • Danvers #126: Thick and tapered, these carrots grow to 8 inches and are sweet and crisp.  Days to harvest: 75.

  • Long Imperator 58:  Long, thin and bright orange, these crisp and tasty carrots requires a light soil. Days to harvest: 77.

  • Thumbelina:  These small, round carrots grow well in dense clay soils.  Days to harvest: 60.

Growing and Fertilizing Carrots With Organic Pure Black Castings™ and VermaPlex®

  • Carrots do well in most soils, although some varieties are better suited for loose soils.  If you have clayey soils, choose carrot varieties such as Thumbelina.

  • Care should be taken to prevent the small carrot seeds from being flushed away until germination.

  • Thinning the seedlings encourages bigger carrots.
  1. Mix in Pure Black Castings™ into your garden soil at a rate of 1 pound per 50 square feet.

  2. Apply VermaPlex® at a rate of 20:1 (20 parts water to 1 part VermaPlex®) at planting. Wetting the carrot seeds (or any vegetable seed) with VermaPlex® helps them germinate quicker.

  3. Apply VermaPlex® at a rate of 40:1 2-3 weeks after seed emergence.

  4. Apply VermaPlex® at a rate of 40:1 when root enlargement occurs.

VermaPlex® can be applied as a drench or as a foliar spray.
